Abstract
UD Bintang Jaya Coffee Powder Factory operates five single-phase electric motors to drive its coffee bean roasting machines. Preliminary observation indicated that these motors do not always operate at full load, which potentially lowers the system power factor (PF) and increases electricity operating costs. This study aims to analyze the electrical power quality resulting from the motor loading and to design and test the effectiveness of capacitor bank compensation using MATLAB Simulink simulation. The research method consisted of direct field measurement of electrical parameters (voltage, current, active power, reactive power, and power factor) on the five motors using a power clamp meter, followed by modeling of the electrical system in MATLAB Simulink using AC Voltage Source, Series RLC Load, Power, and Powergui blocks. The model was validated against the field measurement data before being used to simulate reactive power compensation. The measurement results show that the initial power factor of the five motors ranged from 0.67 to 0.70, well below the PLN minimum standard of 0.85. Validation of the Simulink model against field data yielded an average error below 5%, indicating that the model is sufficiently accurate. Compensation simulation using a total 185 µF (2,813.5 VAR) capacitor bank across the five motors successfully increased the system power factor from 0.67 to 0.95, an improvement of 41.79%, accompanied by a 32.21% reduction in total system current. Economically, the total investment cost required for the capacitor bank was relatively small, amounting to Rp1,895,000. These results indicate that reactive power compensation using a capacitor bank is an effective technical and economical solution for improving electrical power quality in small and medium industries operating single-phase induction motors.
